Rio de Janeiro’s Municipal Department for the Environment’s Hortas Cariocas project has created more than thirty organic food gardens in the favelas and public schools of Rio. The gardens generate jobs for favela residents and people working in the schools, and provides important educational programming for children. Part of what is produced is divided between schools, municipal crèches, and local families at higher social risk. Money derived from the project is reinvested in it.

GMF supports Hortas Cariocas by documenting some of the great work they are doing in the field, and by collaborating with them on a small scale in a variety of ways to augment their efforts.
